God has said: “Neither My heaven nor My earth can contain Me, save (except) the heart of a believer.” -Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

According to the Holy Quran, and nearly every other spiritual tradition and revealed religion, before arriving on the physical plane, our souls existed in a state of subsistence in the Presence of God, yet upon being absorbed and conditioned in this world of form and appearance we lost awareness and consciousness, and so we forgot. Not only did we forget that where we came from and where we are going, but we forgot who we are. We forgot that before ego came into form we were in our purest essence, the pure essence that lived in total bliss, and what makes us who we are, at the depths of our inner being, our core, is the spirit breathed into us by our Creator, God.

Your Lord said to the angels, “I am creating a human being from clay, from molded mud. When I have formed him, and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down prostrating before him.” – Quran [15:29]

I recall my emotions very clearly when I first heard this verse. I felt captivated but also remorseful, remorseful that I mistreated my Self – the Self that God gifted me with I had hurt it unconsciously and boastfully. Know it is the soul which has the power to control the mind, and the mind controls the body; we have free-will but our souls are not free. Our soul is not free because each action we take against our Self (our heart/ our soul) in delight of our bodily desires will affect our Self, it will agitate our heart. Are you aware of this? Society puts much focus on one’s material existence yet rarely any light is placed upon the spiritual journey the heart desires to go through. Soul is metabolizing experience as surely as body is metabolizing food. This life of worldly existence is a mere reflection of our beliefs and thoughts, our own paradigm, and the paradigm we find in our reality is confirmed in our day to day experience. So we are constantly creating our reality, because as Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) informed us: Allah (swt) says, “I am in the good opinion of my servant and as he thinks of Me. If he thinks good of Me then he finds good, and if he thinks bad he will find bad. Moreover as Allah (swt) tells us in His Holy Book, The Quran: “And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful,  I will surely increase you [in favour]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'”

All souls have a natural inclination to know God and it is part of the reason we were created. Now, whether you believe or choose not to believe know that the heart will not taste peace except in surrender to Divine Law and Truth.

One hour’s meditation on the work of the Creator is better than seventy years of prayer. -Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

As long as we believe that the outside world acts independently of us, we have no power, but once we remember that the outside world is a reflection of our inner world, we have unlimited power to change ourselves, consequently change our world. An Arab poet said: this whole cosmos is meanings set up in images and whoever understands that is from the people of discernment. Our Maker Most High taught Adam the names, Divine Names and this knowledge is buried deep within our heart, it is up to us to make this discovery and find inner peace.

The Prophet (S) asked Jibra’il (Angel Gabriel) to exhort him about something. Jibra’il said, “O Muhammad! Live you as you wish, for verily you will die one day. And love whatever you like, for verily you will have to part from it. Act as you wish, for verily you will have to face it. Know that the distinction of a believer lies in his establishing the night vigil and his nobleness lies in refraining from (maligning) the people’s honor.”

Life is such a fragile thing, it is a priceless treasure that we are given to guard and make use of to the best of our ability. It is easy to pass through life in a state of lack of self-awareness and unconsciousness, we get sucked into our daily routines forgetting that these daily moments add up to what we call life. It’s normal and happens to us all, but to remain in oblivion is to deny our soul the nourishment it needs to excel, not only in this transient time, but for eternity… for time without end.
