Reality and appearance, a common motif amongst intellectuals across the ages.
Shaw’s focus in this script (referencing quote) was on the social identity one wears and changes in his/ her lifetime, and that often the appearance of things, people, situations, … is far from the reality. One can say that things appear outwardly wonderful and inwardly futile.
This got me thinking, since the beginning of time there has been many respectable individuals warning their people and society about the deceptive illusory of it all, the world and living at large. But in the age of information while there is an awakening, for me, I see it as yet another misleading concept of reality.
Allah (swt) says: “They know just an outward aspect of the life of this world.”
That is, they only see and believe in what they see. And Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught us: People are asleep and when they die they wake up.
That is, in the realm of meaning they wake up to the reality of things.
